Melva M. Miller, the former CEO of the Association for a Better New York and Deputy Queens Borough President, shares her journey of pursuing and earning a doctorate in Social Welfare from the CUNY Graduate Center with the goal of creating lasting change in her hometown of Queens. After working in business, he joined the CUNY Graduate Center’s Quantitative Methods in the Social Sciences (QMSS) program for hands-on training and a strong research foundation. From studying racial disparities in Chicago’s criminal legal system to collaborating with leading faculty, QMSS gave him the tools to make the leap. Now a Sociology Ph.D. student, he’s pursuing research aimed at understanding and confronting systemic inequities.
