Short Film: “Markets & Makers: The Art of Becoming with Robert L. Newman III” (2025)
“Markets & Makers: The Art of Becoming” offers a timely meditation on creativity, community, legacy, and the spaces we create to shape a future beyond ourselves.
The film centers Harlem-based artist and curator Robert L. Newman III, who traces a path from his grandmother’s doll shop on Tulsa’s Black Wall Street and deep roots in the American South to the campus of Morehouse College and world-expanding careers in both corporate finance and the arts in New York City - from Wall Street to 125th Street.
This intimate portrait invites audiences to reimagine art not just as craft, but as a critical instrument for shaping cultural power, legacy, and healing.

From the heart of one of the world’s most diverse urban centers, the Ph.D. Program in Black, Race, and Ethnic Studies (BRES) at the CUNY Graduate Center, offers students a groundbreaking “discipline-plus-one” experience. Students gain rigorous training in a traditional field — such as history, sociology, or another discipline — while also developing deep expertise in Black, race, and ethnic studies. The program prepares graduates to compete for academic positions as well as roles in the public and private sectors, building advanced research, quantitative, qualitative, and communication skills. Learn about what kinds of students thrive in BRES and how to apply.
